ANSWERING YOUR BURNING Q'S
ENEMA FAQ's
We are here to support your enema journey in every way we can, which is why we have quite the collection of FAQ's straight from our community.
We hope the below will answer your lingering questions!
An enema is a tool to help with your gut health, inflammation or whatever it is that you are suffering from. An enema can help you achieve greater health and wellbeing from just about any condition however, each of you will have a different goal to achieve.
To determine how often you should use your Happy Bum Bag ask yourself a few questions: What are my goals? What is the dis-ease I am trying to solve? How do I feel after my enema? What does my gut say? .
If you are constipated and not going to the toilet 2-3 times a day then a water enema is for you! You can do as many water enemas as you need to get things moving and whenever you need relief. If you are going 2-3 times a day and feel your bowels are emptying fully, you may not need regular water enemas as your body is already eliminating.
You may be suffering from candida, or parasites and then a coffee enema would be more suited to you. Or do you have cancer? Auto-immune disease? Poor skin? Sounds like your inflammation levels are high and regular anti inflammatory enemas would be beneficial until your body becomes less inflamed. Or perhaps alternating between coffee and anti-inflammatory. Do you have trouble sleeping? Probiotic implants are also very powerful for replenishing gut bacteria so if you are doing regular enemas or trying to improve your gut health, regular probiotic implants are very beneficial. Are you anxious? Again what you need will be different to the person next to you. Read the information provided under each recipe and section for further information.
A water enema is great for constipation, clearing the colon and is done by filling the whole 2 litre bag and filling as much as possible. No hold is required as the water is meant to reach as high up in the colon as possible and stimulate a release.⠀
⠀
A coffee enema is used for liver detoxification, boosting antioxidant levels, fighting fatigue, parasites, candida, and be useful for anxiety and depression. Coffee enemas use 600 ml of organic coffee that is then held in the colon for 15 minutes prior to releasing on the toilet.⠀
⠀
Try a water enema before you completing a coffee enema if you have trouble holding the coffee! A clear lower colon will help you hold the coffee solution for longer and make the coffee enema more comfortable to hold.⠀
Water enemas do not require any hold as their purpose is to fill and stimulate as much of the colon to release as possible. You can choose to try to hold but this is not necessary.
10 minutes if you are very sensitive to caffeine, but 15-20 minutes for maximum benefit.
Yes this can help the liver which has extra responsibilities now that you no longer have a gall bladder to detoxify.
Every few months of when it becomes discoloured. Depends on your usage amount. Always clean thoroughly.
Yes water enemas are safe during pregnancy. Always check with your health care professionals before.
If you have inserted the tip and are lying down, sometimes you will find the solution wont flow. This is because either your tip is inserted too far so gently pull it out until it begins flowing, or you have poured coffee grinds into the bag by accident and they have blocked the filter. Hang the bag high for the best gravity flow, and remember sometimes less is more with your insert. Too high and it can come into contact with gas or stool that is up there further and block the solution from coming out the tip.
No, an enema should not be painful. If you are suffering from severe gut issues or constipation you may find it crampy or uncomfortable when the solution comes in. This however should be fast relieved when you sit on the toilet. The insert itself should not be painful and should you experience any pain it would be best to contact your doctor. Detoxing can be a difficult and trying process for some, especially when the body has been struggling for some time. Download our beginners guide to read more about detox symptoms and what to expect.
This depends on how often you are doing an enema or cleansing. We recommend one biotic bulb every 3 enemas. If you have recently been on anti biotics we recommend as many as possible.
You definitely can! You can even mix them together at the same time.
Happy Bum Mag is pure magnesium oxide which has a laxative effect as it softens the stool, however it has no toxic chemicals, nor does it create bowel laziness or dependency like regular laxatives. It is safe to take daily or as needed. This is great to take the night before an enema to increase the amount of waste released.
Yes, definitely! Check out our Instagram @happybumco for recipe ideas.
If kept clean and aired out, you can replace it every 6 months. If for any reason it is left with liquid in, or you can see mold inside the tube, replace your tube immediately.
This is completely dependent on what you are looking to heal or achieve. Coffee enemas are the most common place to start which is why we created the Beginners Bundle, however if you are looking for natural solutions for constipation or bloating, the Constipation Bundle or Bloating and Gut Health Bundle will be a better choice for you. If you are suffering from extreme inflammation, an auto immune condition or chronic disease the cleanse and heal or immune system bundle would likely be best for you. Not all of our bundles include a plunger so we recommend purchasing this separately to keep your enema mixtures in one place. If you struggle with constipation or want a deeper colon cleanse, we also recommend adding the Happy Bum MAG to any bundle.

Here are the 3 main reasons this can happen and how to prevent it & what to do!⠀
⠀
1. You are dehydrated - when you are dehydrated (aka not drinking at least 2.5 litres of water a day, your body will want to absorb any liquid that comes it's way. This can also be true if your diet is hight in salt or processed foods that have lots of additives. When you do an enema, your are inserting water or therapeutic liquid into the colon which then if you are dehydrated will get absorbed instead of released. Our recommendation is to drink lots of (filtered) water daily to ensure you are hydrated, and especially as your are detoxing to ensure your body is able to flush the toxicity out. This will prevent absorption and allow you to release more and not bloat after an enema.⠀
⠀
If this has happened to you and you feel like you retained water during an enema, try doing another water enema to follow to continue the flush out.⠀
⠀
2. Toxins are stirring up, but haven't all come out yet- if you have been constipated, eating poorly or suffering from other discomfort or disease for a long period of time, it will be a process to get everything out of your colon. Your colon is about 2 metres long and the average person is holding around 5-7 kilos of waste in there. If you do not go to the toilet everyday at least once, you are likely on the higher scale of that. Thus, when we do an enema and start to clear the lower colon your body begins to enter detox mode and but as its not able to get everything out we can experience bloating as your body prepares to move the rest. If you are severely constipated, a colonic or serious of colonics may be necessary to help reach higher in your colon but if you do not have access to a clinic, try taking a natural stool softener like magnesium oxide to help dissolve old waste matter and practice regular enemas to clear as much as you can. Your belly should be soft and comfortable to touch, this is a good indication that your are emptying.⠀
⠀
3. You are inflamed - Try taking a strong probiotic, eating and drinking lots of soothing inflammatory foods and minimising stress.⠀
Try doing another water enema to help the excess water and stool move. Sometimes the body absorbs the water when it needs hydration or is there is old compacted stool this can absorb water also so continuing with another flush can help to move everything along.
An enema can only effectively clear the lower part of your descending colon. The large intestine is nearly 2 meters long so clearing the entire thing can take time and often requires a colonic or other help to soften the stool farther up. Enemas can help to bring everything that’s in the lower portion around and make more space for things to move.
Water enema is best for constipation. The larger the fill, the higher up and more waste you can clear. Coffee enemas are good for improving gut health and eliminating things that could be causing constipation. Probiotic implants will also assist in the repopulation of good bacteria which is essential for healthy bowel movements.
Yes when performed correctly enemas are very safe and have been used for hundreds of years in the medical profession. All of our kits are medical grade, TGA approved and come with instructional guides on how to use them safely. There are very few recorded side effects of enemas, and enemas are extremely gentle on the bowel using only gravity to fill the colon. At any point if you feed discomfort you can remove the enema tip and stop the enema. Consult your health care professionals before use if you have any pre existing health conditions.
Coffee enemas or anti parasitic enemas. Diahorrea can be caused from many things, bad bacteria balance, parasites or often hidden constipation. If you see dehydrated stools come through in your enemas, try some larger water enemas to help move the stool along as well.
Coffee and anti – parasitic enemas. Garlic enemas.
Chances are if you have gut issues, you are already struggling in the good bacteria department. A healthy gut microbiome is filled with friendly bacteria, when we cleanse with enemas we do remove both good and bad (your body doesn't discriminate) but with a healthy diet in a clean environment your good bacteria will repopulate naturally and flourish better than if they were in the previous toxic environment. This being said, for best results and if you are doing enemas more than once a week, we highly recommend replenishing your good bacteria in your colon using the Happy Bum Biotic in the bulb. This will ensure the good bacteria colonises before any bad bacteria and should help improve your gut health even further.
Absolutely! This is a beautiful way of getting the Hormone and Calm blend in if you are time poor, don’t feel like doing an enema or want an extra boost.
You can do Coffee Enemas as often as you like depending on your individual health goals and intentions. During a detoxification period we recommend daily enemas, or if you are experiencing extreme constipation. Some choose to do enemas weekly as maintenance or as needed.
Yes, the Coffee in an enema works very differently and puts you into the ‘rest and digest’ parasympathetic nervous system, meaning you will drift off to sleep easily. If you are very sensitive, try a half strength coffee enema and see how your body responds.
Enema’s won't disturb your electrolyte balance any more than a normal bowel motion, however if you are concerned you may add a pinch of rock salt to your water after an enema.
During pregnancy it is safe to take Happy Bum Mag to relieve constipation and Gut Scrub to relieve gas and bloating.
