If you have never had a colon hydrotherapy treatment or tried any kind of at home enema or colon cleanse, you might find yourself thinking… sorry, what?
Why would putting water or coffee up your butt suddenly turn on the emotional waterworks?
It sounds wild, but it happens all the time. The gut is directly linked to our emotions, and in Chinese medicine the colon is known as the place where grief, guilt and anxiety are stored.
When you begin to release the bowel, long held emotional residue often comes with it.
Childhood pain, loss, disappointment, heartbreak, all the things you tucked away so you could keep functioning, finally feel safe enough to surface.
Colon cleansing is about far more than removing stool or physically clearing the lower digestive tract. It is a purge of everything the body has been holding onto. So often, what makes the gut uncomfortable, bloated or constipated is not just food. It is stress, trauma, fear and deep emotional tension.
The colon sits in the base chakra, the energetic centre for safety and security. When your body does not feel safe, when it is bracing or guarding, the bowel slows down. Movement on the loo becomes less frequent, less complete and discomfort begins to build.
In ancient times this was protective. You could not exactly stop for a bowel movement while running from a bear. When the body enters fight or flight mode, blood leaves the digestive system and rushes to the arms and legs so you can run or defend yourself.
The problem today is simple.
Your body cannot tell the difference between physical danger and emotional overwhelm. Constant emails, comparison, pressure, bullying, overstimulation, never feeling enough, always being reachable… your nervous system never switches off. And when your nervous system never switches off, your digestive system never fully turns on.
Over time, everything accumulates until you simply cannot manage it anymore.
Then come the symptoms. Chronic constipation, bloating, skin breakouts, fatigue, dullness, low energy, mood swings, hormonal imbalances, joint pain, weight gain, anxiety, depression. The entire cascade of discomfort that follows a gut under stress.
So you try the chemist. You try the bandaid fixes. Laxatives, suppositories, some cheap fibre. Nothing works.
And then you find yourself here.
Reading about colon cleansing. Wondering why so many people online swear by it. Contemplating sticking something up your butt because you are desperate for relief and curious about these people who seem to be glowing afterwards.
Then you finally get brave enough. You do your first at home enema or book your first colonic… and it happens.
The floodgates open.
You do not know where the tears came from, but suddenly they are there. Your body finally lets go. And afterwards, you feel lighter, not just physically but emotionally. Like a dark cloud has lifted and you can breathe again.
For the first time, you realise how deeply our emotions and our gut are connected. You understand why this practice becomes a lifelong part of so many wellness routines. And why it becomes one of the most important parts of moving through grief, whatever form that may be.
