Candida
Candida overgrowth is commonly referred to as Candidiasis. It is a fungal infection caused by an overgrowth of yeast in the gut. Healthy bacteria in your gut microbiome control the balance of Candida, but changes in bacteria from antibiotics, stress, sugar, heavy metals or other various other factors can cause the yeast to overgrow and cause infection.
Candida overgrowth releases many toxic byproducts including ammonia, uric acid and acetaldehyde into the bloodstream. These can create a myriad of unwanted and uncomforatble symptoms both mentally and physically that will not go away until the underlying cause in the gut is addressed.
5 Common Symptoms of Candida Overgrowth
Brain Fog & Fatigue
Impacting nutrient absorption, Candida overgrowth can create nutrtional deficiencies in essential vitamins such as B3, fatty acids and magnesium leading to chronic fatigue. Candida overgrowth and mycotoxins, the by-products of candida, can attack any organ or system in the body. When left untreated, it becomes a pathogenic fungus with roots that cause a myriad of symptoms including brain fog.
Recurring Urinary Tract Infections & Thrush
Frequent vaginal yeast infections which can be identified by, burning sensations when urinating, vaginal itching and/ or a cloudy dark urine can be caused by candida overgrowth. Urinary tract infections can also be linked to having candida. Men may also experience genital yeast infections but it is less common.
Digestive Issues
A healthy digestive system relies on good gut bacteria balance. When we experience a candida overgrowth this good bacteria balance is altered and symptoms of bloating, constipation, diarrhea, gas and cramping are common. Sugar cravings from the yeast are also a sign of candida and impact the gut microbiome.
Itching & Skin Irritations
Skin redness, itching, and burning can all be symptoms of Candida as the skin also relies on good bacteria to regulate it. Skin candiasis can affect any part of the body however it is most common in areas that get moisure - armpit and groin are particularly common.
Joint Pain
Joint pain, stiffness and swelling in the joints is often associated with candida overgrowth as the infection enters the blood stream. Arthritis and bone infection can also occur in the affected areas.
What to do if you suspect a candida overgrowth
It is common for any of these symptoms to be given a band-aid type solution that will never scratch the surface of the rootcause. If you are experiencing re-occuring issues then it is time to look deeper than a thrush cream. Although candida can be difficult to eliminate and may require a sugar restricted diet, the best place to start is by flushing the overgrowth out of the gut!
