Hormonal Imbalances
A hormonal imbalance occurs in the body when you have too much or too little of one or more hormones. The endocrine system is delicate, meaning a small change can have a big effect. Maintaining the right balance of hormones is needed for a healthy reproductive cycle, including processes like ovulation in women and overall conception. Hormones also control your weight, moods, growth, sex drive, cognitive function and so much more.
One common cause of hormonal imbalances is liver congestion. This occurs when the liver becomes overburdened from chemical toxicity or stress and can no longer eliminate used hormones effectively. This can result in the hormones being reabsorbed into the bloodstream and recirculated, causing imbalances.
6 Common Symptoms of a Hormonal Imbalance
Painful PMS Symptoms
A healthy period should be pain-free. Extreme cramping, blood clotting, nausea, fainting, breast swelling, hot flushes, PCOS, endometriosis, mood swings, breakouts and weight gain are all signs of hormonal imbalances. Although they may be common, they are not normal. PMS symptoms may occur when the liver is sluggish and no longer eliminating excess oestrogen effectively through the hormones out of balance. Used hormones then get reabsorbed back into the blood stream causing issues. Heavy metals and endocrine disrupting chemicals in the environment, cooking wear, beauty, clothing, paint, food and tap water can also contribute.
Acne
If your hormones are imbalanced and your liver is sluggish, it may lead to hormonal acne. Breakouts can occur on the face, back, legs or anywhere around the body and can be extremely painful, embarrassing and uncomfortable.
Weight Gain
If your hormones are out of balance, your cortisol is high and your body's signals for hunger, and energy use can be disrupted, potentially leading to overeating or increased fat storage. It is also extremely difficult to lose weight or regulate a stable weight when the body has hormones misfiring and cortisol levels are high.
Severe mood swings & Anxiety
Our body works well when it’s evenly balanced so it makes sense that hormonal imbalance can cause severe mood swings. This means you might be feeling extremely happy one minute and move swiftly to irritable or angry the next. Anxiety and depression is also very commonly linked to hormonal imbalances, especially postpartum. This can become even more prevalent if you are not getting adequate sleep.
Infertility
Hormonal imbalances are a common cause for struggling with conception and fertility. When we are not producing enough of the right hormones or the signals are getting lost, it can be challenging to fall pregnant.
Hot Flashes & Menopauseal Symptoms
During the transition to menopause as the body begins it's anti-aging process, it is common for hormonal imbalances to appear in the form of hot sweats, irritability, weight gain, constipation and other uncomfortable symptoms.
