Constipation & Bloating
Constipation is one of the most frequent gastrointestinal complaints worldwide with over 6 million people seeking help from healthcare providers each year. Constipation is difficulty passing stools or infrequent bowel movements. It can be common in both adults and children and can lead to many other uncomfortable concerns. These can include haemorrhoids, bloating, stomach pain, weight gain, abdominal distension, lower back pain, fatigue, brain fog and body odor.
Although most people will experience constipation at some point, chronic constipation is where symptoms persist over an extended period. It can significantly impact daily life and overall comfort, making even routine activities challenging and uncomfortable.
5 Symptoms of Constipation
Infrequent Bowel Movements & Difficulty Passing Stool
Anything less than 2-3 bowel movements a day can be considered constipation as the body should be eliminating as often as it is consuming. A healthy transit time should be between 12-48 hours. The longer the stool sits in the colon before elimination, the more dehydrated it becomes and thus even harder to pass. Lack of fibre, dehydration, pain medications, stress, highly processed foods and lack of movement can all be contributing factors of constipation.
Hard & Lumpy Stools
The stools tend to be firm and difficult to pass, often appearing dry and lumpy. The longer stool sits in the large intestine before elimination, the more dehydrated and hard it becomes. Insufficient water and fibre can exacerbate the issue. These stools can be painful to pass.
Gas and Bloating
Increased gas production from stool sitting and fermenting in the colon is a common symptoms of constipation. This can further impact the gut microbiome, make your stomach feel sore, tight and heavy and is incredible uncomfortable.
Weight Gain
The average person is holding 5-7 KG (11-15LBS) of stool in their colon. By not going to the toilet regularly, weight gain due to the stool compacting. This can also result in further bloating, fluid retention and heaviness. If you're putting on weight or struggling to take it off - you could have a compacted colon!
Fatigue & Brain Fog
Fatigue is common side effect of constipation, often due to poor sleep quality, reabsorption of toxins back into the blood stream and poor nutrient absorption. Brain fog is also common when you are constipated as toxins are not being eliminated effectively. When the the gut is in dysbiosis which directly affects our mental clarity, energy levels and concentration.
