How To Give Yourself An Enema

May 15, 2025Kyah Seary

You’ve bought your kit, and now you’re wondering how on earth you give yourself an enema without calling out for help. After all, the whole point of choosing to do an enema was so that you can do it in the confines of your own bathroom to find some instant relief.

An enema is a type of colon cleanse using liquid infused into the colon via your rectum. The liquid stimulates a release and evacuation from the colon. Enemas can be an amazing tool for detoxing and may have many different benefits. They are gravity-fed, very low pressure and are very safe when used as directed.

Whether you’re doing a water enema or a coffee one, we have some steps for you to follow to make the process as easy as possible.

5 easy steps to give yourself a water enema

Water enemas help to soften the stool and expand the colon, which stimulates the natural contractions of the intestinal muscles. This process encourages the bowel to move and expel waste more easily. The warmth of the water also helps relax the muscles in the intestines, making it easier to pass stool.

  1. For a water enema, you’ll need a silicone enema bag, and a bit of lube or coconut oil. And that’s it!

  2. Bring 1 to 2 litres of filtered, boiled water to room temperature and pour it in your silicone bag.

  3. Find your location and set yourself up. The bathroom is usually a good idea so that you’re near your toilet. Put down a towel or blanket and hang your bag up.

  4. Lie down, get yourself comfortable, add some lube or coconut oil to the tip, insert to 2 or 3 inches, and simply release the clamp.

  5. Once the liquid from the bag has emptied (or when you feel like you’ve had enough), simply take out the tip, and release on the toilet.

That’s it!

6 easy steps to give yourself a coffee enema

A coffee enema enhances liver detoxification more than a water enema by increasing bile flow, boosting glutathione production, and aiding toxin removal. It also activates the parasympathetic nervous system, promotes peristalsis, and may help clear parasites, yeast, gas, mold, and gut inflammation. Unlike a water enema, it should be retained for 12 -15 minutes for maximum benefit.

  1. First, you’ll need all your supplies. A silicone enema bag, some coffee, and a bit of lube or coconut oil. Another great idea is to buy the discounted Happy Bum Beginners Bundle which includes the cleaning solution and the plunger).

  2. Read through the user manual that comes with your kit or simply watch our ‘How To Do A Coffee Enema’ video. This will help you feel more comfortable with the process and give you some ideas on where you’re going to set up your enema bag. Tip: We recommend the Medium Roast coffee if you’re just starting out.

  3. Create your coffee solution by adding 10 grams of coffee to 600 – 800ml filtered and boiled water. Then pour it into your bag when it has reached room temperature. Make sure the clamp is in when you’re pouring the liquid into your bag so that it doesn’t spill everywhere (and don’t be too frustrated if you forget – it happens to the best of us).

  4. Find your location and set yourself up. The bathroom is usually a good idea so that you’re near your toilet. Put down a towel or blanket, and maybe even a pillow, and hang your bag up. Remember, The higher the bag, the quicker the flow. If this is your first enema, we recommend not hanging it too high.

  5. Lie down, get yourself comfortable, add some lube or coconut oil to the tip, insert, and simply release the clamp.

  6. Once the solution has been emptied out the bag you can take out the tip (or leave it in if you prefer). From here, the aim is to hold the liquid for 12 – 15 minutes. Don’t worry if you can’t hold for the full time. It takes practice and you’ll still get benefits no matter how long you hold it for. When you can no longer hold the enema anymore, or you’ve come to the end of your 15-minute hold time, sit on the toilet and let it all go.

So, can you do an enema on your own? You certainly can. They’re safe, easy to use, and the benefits are huge. If you’re looking for a way to treat constipation or help through your detoxification journey, enemas are the perfect at-home tool to add to your routine.
