Top 15 FAQ's About Coffee Enemas
1. How do you actually do a coffee enema?
Coffee enemas are very simple and easy to do at home. It is very safe and we have so much support when it comes to this. Want to learn more in depth? Download our Full Coffee Enema Guide or if you are more visual - Watch Full Video
To break it down simply here: Brew your coffee, let it cool, strain it and pour it into your pre-assembled hanging enema kit. Get comfy, insert the tip and unclamp the hose to allow the flow. Hold for 15 minutes and then release in the toilet.
2. What type of coffee should I use for a coffee enema?
We only recommend Happy Bum Beans because they are the highest quality, organic and contain high caffeine and palmitic acid which helps with the benefits. Our organic enema coffee is tested for mold and mycotoxins which is really important. It is also small batch roasted to ensure it is fresh!
Beginners we recommend using the Medium Roast Happy Bum Beans as they are the mid-strength and easy on the gut.
For more advanced coffee enema users we recommend the Golden Roast Enema Coffee as it is slightly higher in caffeine for a stronger detox. At the end of the day, you could start with either one and it is totally personal preference. You can even try both and mix it up!
Never use non-organic coffee, espresso, instant coffee or anything that isn't pure and clean. Coffee is a high mold product so it is absolutely essential you use a coffee that is tested for mold and toxins.
3. How often should you do a coffee enema?
This is extremely individual. Some people start doing coffee enemas for. constipation in which their bowels are not moving on their own and may need to do them more regularly. Others may be on a protocol with a holistic practitioner for several months to do a large detox and reset so several coffee enemas a week may have been recommended. Others using coffee enemas for general health and wellness may wish to use them once or twice a week for general maintenance and managing the gut and toxic load.

4. What does doing a coffee enema feel like? Does it hurt or is it awkward?
This is something a lot of people are worried about but rest assured coffee enemas are not painful at all. Generally it feels like doing a big poo, and the insert (ladies, for reference it feels like inserting a tampon) and men it just feels a little funny. The best part is that you can do them at home in the privacy of your own bathroom so no one has to be there and you can make yourself comfortable. As you see the benefits and what comes out, you'll quickly realise the benefits far outweigh putting a tiny soft tip up your bum.
5. Are coffee enemas safe?
Absolutely. Enemas are a traditional tool used for cleansing across every culture for centuries. Enemas were and still are used in hospitals and our kits are medical grade. Coffee enemas are simply activating deeper benefits than simply water for colon cleansing by having the coffee (which is mainly made up of water as well) stimulate bile flow and glutathione production.
Coffee enemas are very safe and cannot cause any kind of perforation of the bowel (it is literally impossible) as they are soft silicone tips, only go up a very small way into the rectum and only use gravity which is extremely low pressure.
Of course, with anything you need to use as directed and use your common sense. All of our guides will walk you through how to safely do a coffee enema and prior to use if you have any exisiting conditions or want personal medical advice, it is your responsibility to seek this from your health advisor.
6. Do coffee enemas impact your electrolyte balance in the body and how can you rebalance this?
Doing a coffee enema is like doing a big poo. Some electrolytes are lost but nothing worth being concerned about. Drinking coffee or any kind of caffeine has the same effect and it is very easy to rebalance. We recommend drinking Happy Hydrate our pure coconut water powder after a coffee enema to replenish key minerals and natural electrolytes.
It is also a good idea to stay hydrated before doing coffee enemas too as this will ensure your body releases well instead of absorbs the liquid.
7. How long should I hold a coffee enema?
We recommend aiming for 12–15 minutes, as this is for the optimal glutathione and liver detoxification benefits. During a 15 minutes coffee enema hold, your entire blood supply travels through the liver for filtration 4-5 times. BUT this is quite challenging for beginners and you may need to work up to it, Don't be discouraged, its normal to start off with less than a few minutes and work your way up.
The best part? You still get benefits even from a few minutes. Practice makes perfect! You may even find that different days are different - similar to how you don't always hit your PB (personal best) in the gym or other sports everyday.

8. What is the difference between a water enema and a coffee enema?
Water enemas are a quick, natural, instant way to relieve constipation at home or while travelling. They involve allowing the full 1-2 litres of purified body temperature water in through the rectum and then releasing on the toilet after. It's essentially a manual stimulation for the bowel and a great tool for anyone with constipation. A quick fix and wellness tool.
Coffee enemas still relieve constipation but go a bit deeper. They are more generally recommended for their liver detoxification benefits and deeper healing. They also stimulate liver bile flow which can also help clear higher up constipation. So
9. Can you do coffee enemas when pregnant?
No, we don't recommend coffee enemas during pregnancy as they are too strong a detox. Here is a great article on how to support your gut during pregnancy and beyond. Water enemas may be suitable for pregnancy constipation, many Happy Bum Mama's have used them in the past but it is best to check with your midwife and listen to your body.
10. Why do I feel bloated after doing a coffee enema? Is this normal - I thought they were supposed to get rid of bloating?
Bloating when you begin to detox and shift your gut microbiome is very common. It is a sign that everything is being stirred up but hasn't quite been removed yet. Candida die off, parasite die off and old stool moving in the colon that has been causing you grief for some time can cause gas to move which is uncomfortable but also necessary as it has to come out.
We recommend if you feel bloated after an enema, do another one to help clear whatever hasn't been released. There is no right or wrong when it comes to enemas, you need to listen to your body.
The right aftercare also makes a world of difference. Taking Gut Scrub which is a detox binder will help to eliminate the gas and bloating when doing enemas and we highly recommend this. It is 100% diatomaceous earth and can help you move through the detox symptoms quicker.

11. Do I have to lie on my left side when I do a coffee enema?
No, you don't have to lay on your left side but many wish to. You can also lie on your back or even stand up, whatever is most comfortable. Remember you will ideally be here for 15 minutes so make sure you get comfortable! The coffee gets absorbed via your bloodstream so no matter how you lie down it will be effective.

Cleaning your kit is easy! We created the perfect product to keep it clean and hold free. Simply Rinse with warm water, add Happy Bum Clean, let it bubble and soak, then rinse and air‑dry. Learn more about cleaning your kit.

13. Do I need to take a probiotic after doing a coffee enema?
We always recommend probiotics after coffee enemas as it is a great way to replenish good bacteria in your gut (that's why we created Gut Food!) but it is not absolutely necessary especially if you have a nutrient and probiotic rich diet. If you are struggling with gut issues, we highly recommend a high strength strain like the Bacillus Coagulans which is in Gut Food - a resistant and hardy probiotic that actually gets to your gut and has clinically been shown to improve microbiome diversity and symptoms of IBS.

14. Will coffee enema affect my normal bowel movements?
Great question. The answer is no however, if you find your bowel movements take a few days to return after doing an enema - it is a sign of your true transit time and how slow your normal motility in your colon is. AKA you are more constipated than your realise as from the time you eat to the time something comes out should be 12-48 hours max! Because coffee enemas clear farther back than you would in one bowel movement, it becomes clear how slow the rest of your stool is moving in the colon.
We recommend increasing your hydration and electrolytes with Happy Hydrate, taking a high quality fibre supplement to help provide more bulk to the stools and move things along or if you are really backed up, have had weight loss surgery or have lifelong history of constipation take ConstaClear! This is high strength Magnesium oxide which will help to soften and dissolve the stool in the colon making for an easy exit (but it does need water to work it's best so drink up!)
