Why Coffee Enemas Are Having a Moment (And Why Your Body Will Thank You For It)
A deeper look at the history, the science, and the very real reasons people are obsessing over coffee enemas for detox, gut health and feeling like themselves again.
Let's be honest. The wellness world can feel a little overwhelming. New supplements every week, a different superfood every month, and a rotating cast of trends that come and go faster than you can say "gut microbiome." So when something sticks around, gains momentum year after year, and keeps attracting passionate devotees across every corner of the holistic health space, it's worth paying attention.
Coffee enemas are having a serious moment. And from where we sit at Happy Bum Co, it's not a moment at all. It's a movement.
I know this personally. As a teenager I struggled with chronic health issues that left me exhausted, foggy, bloated and completely disconnected from my body. I tried everything. It wasn't until I discovered enemas, and eventually coffee enemas, that things genuinely began to shift. My energy came back. My digestion changed. My skin cleared. I felt like myself for the first time in years. That experience became the entire reason Happy Bum Co exists, because I knew there were so many people out there who needed this information and just hadn't found it yet.
So consider this your introduction. Or if you've been curious for a while, consider it the deep dive you've been waiting for.
"All Disease Begins in the Gut" — And They Weren't Wrong
Hippocrates said it thousands of years ago and modern science keeps proving him right. The gut is not just where food gets digested. It's where immunity lives, where hormones are regulated, where inflammation is either controlled or let loose, and where so much of our mental wellbeing is quietly determined.
In today's world though, the gut is under more pressure than ever. We're checking emails before bed, grabbing drive-through dinners on the way home from school pickup, and running on cortisol like it's a food group. We are constantly bombarded with toxins, chemicals, pesticides, hormone-disrupting plastics, and ultra-processed foods that barely qualify as food. And we're too busy, too tired, and too overwhelmed to stop and notice the cumulative effect all of this is having on our bodies.
The result? We're bloated. We're foggy. We're exhausted in a way that sleep doesn't fix. Our hormones are all over the place, our skin is breaking out, our digestion is sluggish, and that baseline feeling of "just not quite right" has somehow become our normal.
It isn't normal. And your grandmother definitely wouldn't think so.
We are collectively in desperate need of a detox, and not the seven-day juice fast kind. We need something that actually works with the body's natural pathways to shift the load. Something that goes deeper. Something that supports the liver, clears the gut, and leaves you feeling genuinely lighter and more energised. That's exactly where coffee enemas come in.
Coffee Enemas Through History: This Isn't New
Before we get into the science, let's talk history, because one of the most common misconceptions about coffee enemas is that they're some kind of modern wellness fad dreamed up by influencers on Instagram. They are absolutely not.
Enemas are one of the oldest healing tools in recorded human history and they appear in the medical texts of almost every ancient culture. In Ancient Egypt, enemas were a routine part of healthcare. Practitioners understood that waste buildup in the colon created stagnation throughout the entire body, so clearing the bowel was considered fundamental to preventing illness and restoring vitality. In Ayurveda, one of the world's oldest medical systems, enemas called basti are a core therapy used for balancing Vata, supporting elimination and clearing toxins from the body. Traditional Chinese Medicine used herbal enemas to move stagnation, clear heat and support the digestive organs.
Even in early Western medicine, enemas were standard practice. Women going into labour received enemas. Patients heading into surgery received them too. They were simply considered a normal part of responsible medical care, with a clear understanding that colon health mattered.
Coffee enemas specifically became popular in the early 1900s. During World War I, nurses discovered something remarkable: when coffee was administered rectally to soldiers for constipation relief, those soldiers also experienced improved pain relief. That observation sparked serious curiosity, and researchers began investigating why coffee had such a powerful systemic effect when used this way rather than drunk. What they discovered would later become the foundation of modern coffee enema therapy and, eventually, the cornerstone of the renowned Gerson Protocol for healing.
This practice has centuries of roots. We're just finally giving it the scientific language to explain why it works so well.
The Glutathione Connection: The Science That Makes It All Make Sense
One of the most significant reasons coffee enemas have gained so much traction in the integrative health world comes down to a single molecule: glutathione.
Glutathione is the body's master antioxidant. It lives inside every cell, and its job is to protect you. It neutralises free radicals, supports the immune system, helps the liver break down and safely remove toxins, clears used hormones, processes heavy metals, and helps eliminate mould toxins and chemicals that accumulate over time. It is absolutely essential to your body's ability to detoxify itself.
Here's the problem. Modern life depletes glutathione fast. Chronic stress, alcohol, processed food, medications, environmental toxins and poor sleep all hammer your glutathione levels over time, and a depleted system simply can't keep up with the body's detox demands.
Research has indicated that certain compounds in coffee, particularly caffeine and palmitic acid, may stimulate an enzyme called glutathione-S-transferase (GST) when absorbed through the rectal wall. This enzyme plays a crucial role in binding toxins to glutathione so they can be safely escorted out of the body. Some research has suggested the increase in GST activity in response to coffee compounds could be significant, potentially in the hundreds of percent, which is where the often-cited figure around a 600-700% boost in glutathione production comes from.
Whether you've heard that specific number or not, the key point is this: coffee enemas may meaningfully support your liver's ability to produce and utilise glutathione in a way that oral supplementation simply cannot match. Why? Because glutathione supplements are largely broken down by stomach acid before they can be absorbed. Coffee enemas bypass digestion entirely, working through the portal vein which connects the colon directly to the liver, delivering those compounds straight to the source.
This is also why the quality of your coffee matters enormously. You want Happy Bum Beans Organic Medium Roast specifically designed for enemas, organic, third-party tested for mould and mycotoxins, and high in the caffeine and palmitic acid that drive this process. If you're ready for a more advanced detox experience, our Golden Roast offers a higher concentration of both compounds for deeper liver support. These are not the same as your morning flat white and the distinction matters, because you're putting this directly into your body.

How Does a Coffee Enema Actually Work?
Here's the physiology in plain English, because once you understand what's happening inside your body during a coffee enema, the benefits stop feeling mysterious and start feeling obvious.
When you infuse warm organic coffee into the lower bowel, the compounds in the coffee are absorbed through the rectal veins and travel via the portal vein directly to the liver. This is a pathway that simply does not exist when you drink coffee. The caffeine and palmitic acids then stimulate the liver to increase bile production and open the bile ducts more fully.
Bile is the liver's main detox vehicle. It carries toxins, used hormones, heavy metals, parasites, candida, mould toxins and metabolic waste out of the liver and into the gut for elimination. When bile flow is sluggish (and in most modern humans dealing with stress, poor diet, antibiotic use and environmental toxin exposure, it absolutely is), the liver falls behind on its detox workload. Toxins that should have left the body get recirculated instead.
Coffee enemas help turn that around. By stimulating bile flow and supporting glutathione production simultaneously, they essentially give the liver the tools it needs to catch up. At the same time, the warm liquid in the colon helps soften and release old stool, mucus and buildup that contribute to that familiar heavy, bloated, foggy feeling.
During a 15-minute coffee enema hold, the entire blood supply passes through the liver four to five times for filtration. That's why people describe feeling noticeably clearer and lighter afterward. It's not placebo. The biology is real.

Your Liver Is Working Overtime (And It's Probably Not Getting the Support It Needs)
Your liver is one of the largest organs in your body and it is relentlessly busy. It filters every single drop of blood in your system, processes chemicals, medications, hormones, alcohol, food additives and environmental toxins, converting them into forms your body can safely eliminate. It manages blood sugar, produces hormones, stores nutrients and plays a central role in immune function.
A century ago, this was a manageable workload. Today? The liver is under more pressure than it has ever faced in human history. We are exposed to thousands of synthetic chemicals that didn't exist before the 20th century. We live indoors breathing recycled air, eat food that has been sprayed, processed and packaged, deal with unrelenting chronic stress, and carry a body burden of toxins that accumulates faster than most people's livers can clear.
When the liver becomes overwhelmed, the signs show up all over the body. You might notice persistent fatigue, brain fog, irritability, or a general feeling of "flat" that you can't shake. Your skin might break out or develop persistent eczema. Your digestion might slow down into constipation, bloating or IBS-like symptoms. Your hormones might feel completely out of whack. Period pain, PMS, PCOS, unexplained weight gain, fertility struggles, perimenopausal symptoms that feel disproportionate, all of these can be connected to a liver that's carrying too much load.
These symptoms aren't random and they're definitely not just "getting older." They are your body's way of waving a flag.
Coffee enemas may help relieve all of them, not by masking symptoms but by supporting the liver to actually do its job more effectively. Better bile flow. More glutathione. A cleaner gut environment. Less recirculating toxic load. The body starts to catch up, and you start to feel the difference.

Parasites, Candida, Mould and Hormones: Why Coffee Enemas Are a Game Changer for Deeper Protocols
If you're deep in a gut healing journey, doing a parasite cleanse, working on candida overgrowth, dealing with mould exposure or trying to balance your hormones, coffee enemas are not just helpful. They may be one of the most important tools in your entire protocol.
Here's why. When you're actively clearing parasites, candida, mould toxins or excess hormones, your liver is being asked to process a significant additional load. The toxins released during die-off, the used hormones your body is finally starting to clear, the waste from pathogens being eliminated, all of it has to move through the liver. If the liver's detox pathways are sluggish and bile flow is slow, those substances don't exit the body efficiently. They get recirculated, contributing to the headaches, fatigue, skin flares and general misery of what people call a Herxheimer reaction or detox symptom.
Coffee enemas help by keeping bile flowing, keeping the liver processing, and giving the colon a clear path for elimination. When toxins can actually leave the body rather than cycling back around, the whole process becomes faster and more comfortable.
This is why coffee enemas are such an integral part of the Gerson Protocol and why integrative practitioners routinely recommend them during parasite cleanses and candida protocols. They're also why we wrote a dedicated piece on common parasites in humans and on the fascinating topic of what are liver flukes and why you see them after a coffee enema, because once people start, they have a lot of questions about what they're actually releasing.
Used oestrogen is also worth a specific mention here. When the liver can't clear used hormones efficiently, they get reabsorbed, which drives all kinds of hormonal imbalances including PMS, acne, mood swings, PCOS, endometriosis and even raises the risk of hormone-related cancers over time. Supporting the liver to clear oestrogen properly is one of the most powerful things you can do for long-term hormonal health, and coffee enemas may play a direct role in that.
You can get a broader picture of how it all fits together in our Detoxing Simplified blog.
How Often Should You Do Coffee Enemas?
This is one of the most common questions we get, and the honest answer is that it depends on you.
Those following the Gerson Protocol may do several coffee enemas a day. People dealing with significant toxic load, chronic illness or active parasite protocols often find daily sessions or several times a week deliver the best results. Others who are using coffee enemas for general wellness, consistent energy and digestive support might use them once or twice a week. Some people do them whenever their body calls for it.
There is no single right answer. Coffee enemas are a tool, not a prescription, and your needs will be individual to you. We always recommend working with a health practitioner who understands your situation, especially if you're navigating a specific health condition.
What we do recommend for everyone doing coffee enemas regularly is solid aftercare. Specifically, replenishing your electrolytes with Happy Bum Hydrate, our unique electrolyte blend with fulvic acid, amino acids and zinc, to keep your minerals topped up and detox symptoms minimal. And replenishing your gut microbiome with Gut Food, our 3-in-1 probiotic, protein and wholefood powder, because a healthy gut microbiome is the foundation everything else builds on.
Adding Gut Scrub (food-grade diatomaceous earth) as a binder is also a great move, especially during more intensive cleansing periods, as it helps capture and escort released toxins out of the body so they don't get reabsorbed.
How to Do Your First Coffee Enema at Home
Here's the beautiful thing about coffee enemas: they are genuinely easy. You can do them at home, in your bathroom, in about 30 minutes from start to finish, and the investment of that time pays back many times over in how you feel.
What you need:
The simplest place to start is our Beginners Bundle, which has everything included and takes all the guesswork out of your first experience. It includes your choice of enema kit, your coffee, and everything you need to brew, prep, use and clean your kit.
For your kit, you'll choose between:
Silicone Kit: Medical grade, BPA free, durable, lightweight and great for travel. This is what we recommend for beginners. Easy to use, easy to clean, impossible to break.
Glass Kit: Our premium option, medical grade and beautifully designed with a macramé holder. A more elevated home detox experience for those who like things a little extra. Both kits deliver exactly the same results.
For your coffee, Happy Bum Beans Medium Roast is the ideal starting point: organic, air-roasted, third-party tested for mould and mycotoxins, pre-ground for convenience, and designed specifically to deliver optimal glutathione-stimulating compounds. One bag makes 30 to 40 enemas. If you're ready to go deeper, the Golden Roast offers a more advanced detox experience.
If you want the complete setup including supplements for replenishment and support, the Happy Gut Bundle is our most comprehensive offering and includes the probiotic Gut Food and Gut Scrub binder alongside your enema kit and coffee.
The process:
Scoop about 2 tablespoons (10g) of Happy Bum Beans into your plunger. Cover with boiling filtered water, around 600-800ml, and allow to steep for 10 minutes. Press the plunger and let the brew cool to body temperature. This part is important. Too hot and you won't be comfortable. Body temperature is the sweet spot.
Pour your cooled coffee into your enema kit, making sure the clamp is fully closed first! Set yourself up in a comfortable spot in the bathroom with a towel, a pillow and whatever makes you feel relaxed. Soft lighting, a podcast, a book. This is genuinely your 15 minutes.
Lubricate the tip with coconut oil or your preferred lubricant, gently insert, and slowly release the clamp to allow the coffee to flow in. Lie on your side or your back. Try to hold for 10 to 15 minutes.
On your very first time, holding the full 15 minutes is unlikely and completely fine. It takes practice, and the less inflamed and toxic your body becomes over time, the easier holding becomes. Don't stress it.
When you feel the urge to go, or when your 15 minutes is up, make your way to the toilet and release. Take your time here. Most people spend a good 10 to 15 minutes on the toilet after a coffee enema as the liver bile, released toxins and waste make their way out. This is the moment everything has been working toward.
After that? Get dressed, have your Hydrate electrolytes and your Gut Food, and notice how you feel. Lighter? Clearer? Less bloated? That glow from the inside out is very real.
