How to do your first coffee enema
First, gather your supplies, read the user manual, and watch our “How To Do a Coffee Enema” video to get familiar with the process.
Make your coffee solution by adding 10g of coffee to 600 – 800ml of filtered, boiled water. Let it cool to room temperature, then pour it into your enema bag. Make sure the clamp is closed so it doesn’t spill.
Set up in your bathroom near a toilet. Lay down a towel or blanket, maybe a pillow, and hang the bag (keep it low for a slow flow if you’re new). If using a bucket or standing enema kit, place it on a secure surface above where you are laying for the same effect.
Lie down, get comfy, apply lube (or coconut oil) to the tip, insert it, and release the clamp.
Once the bag is empty, remove the tip (or leave it in if you prefer). Try to hold the enema for 12 – 15 minutes. Don’t stress if you can’t – it takes time and consistency to get there.
When you're ready, sit on the toilet and release.

Frequently asked questions and answers
Should I do a water enema first? We think a water enema first as a trial run is a great idea! Not only will it give you more confidence and practice to do your coffee enema, but it’s also great for constipation because the warmth of the water helps to relax the muscles in the intestines, making it easier to pass stool. Doing a water enema right before you do a coffee enema will help to cleanse the lower colon and allow for an easier, more successful time holding your first coffee enema.
Does it hurt? No, coffee enemas shouldn't be painful. The tip is a soft silicone and it is very small. Ladies, the insert is comparable to a tampon and the entire process is not painful. Your tummy may gurgle but the relief on the toilet after is well worth it!
How often can you do an enema? Enemas are an individual practice, so what one person might need another might not. You can do them daily, weekly, monthly, or simply whenever your body is calling for one. If you suffer from chronic constipation, a daily enema can be a helpful tool to find some relief at home while you work alongside tackling the root cause. If you’re doing a general cleanse, or just starting out, 1 – 2 times a week is ideal to stay on top of your toxic load. Listening to your body is the most important thing or seeking advice from a natural practitioner. To kickstart any major liver detox, you are welcome to follow our 21 day challenge to guide you through a transformative coffee enema detox.
Can I still do a coffee enema if I’m sensitive to coffee? You sure can. The caffeine does not go through the digestive system, so the effects are very different to drinking them. However, if you are concerned, we recommend starting with only a small amount of coffee and working your way up. And while many of our customers love their nightly routine, it’s also a good idea to try it in the morning first to see how it affects you. You can also try a herbal enema, such as Happy Liver if you are extremely sensitive to caffeine and wish to avoid it.
What’s the best time to do a coffee enema? The great thing about doing enemas at home is that you have the freedom to do them at any time of the day! We suggest trying a few different times to find what you feel works best for you. Leaving yourself enough time and making sure you can relax is key.
Do I need to take a probiotic or electrolyte after my coffee enema? We always recommend replenishing good bacteria and electrolytes after a coffee enema. We also recommend staying hydrated with filtered drinking water and eating healthy foods to compliment your detox.
Good luck with your first coffee enema! And remember, the team at Happy Bum Co are always here to help with any questions you may have.
