How To Do Your First Coffee Enema (It's Easier Than You Think!)

Jun 01, 2025Kyah Seary

So you've taken the plunge and decided to try a coffee enema. First of all, welcome to the club! We know the idea can feel a little daunting at first, and trust us, you are absolutely not alone in that. We hear from nervous first-timers every single day and the number one thing they all tell us after their first one? "That was way easier than I expected!"

After your first session, most people are honestly a bit surprised by how simple and comfortable the process is. And once you feel the relief and clarity that follows, it very quickly becomes something you actually look forward to. Whether it ends up being part of your daily ritual, a weekly wind-down, or something you reach for whenever your body needs a reset, you'll wonder how you ever lived without it.

In this guide we're going to walk you through everything step by step, from what you need to how to actually do it, and then we'll answer the questions we get asked most by people just starting out. You've got this!

What You'll Need Before You Start

Before your first coffee enema, gather your supplies, read through the user manual that comes with your kit, and watch our How To Do a Coffee Enema video so you can actually see the process in action. Watching it once will make everything click.

Here's what you need:

  • Happy Bum Bag Silicone Enema Kit — our bestselling, 100% medical grade, BPA-free 2L silicone kit. TGA and FDA approved, easy to set up, and built to last.
  • Happy Bum Beans Organic Enema Coffee — not all coffee is created equal. Regular coffee can contain mold, pesticides, and mycotoxins. Happy Bum Beans are 100% organic, mold-free, and specifically roasted to maximise caffeine and palmitic acid content for optimal liver stimulation.
  • A plunger to brew your coffee.
  • Coconut oil or a natural lubricant for the tip.

If you don't have any of the above yet, the absolute easiest way to get started is with our Happy Bum Beginner's Bundle. It has literally everything you need in one box, at a discounted price, so you can just open it and go. Simple!

How To Do Your First Coffee Enema: Step by Step

Step 1: Brew Your Coffee

Add approximately 10g (around 2 tablespoons) of your Happy Bum Beans to 600–800ml of filtered, boiled water in your plunger. Let it steep for 10–15 minutes, press the plunger down, and then allow it to cool to body temperature before you use it. You can speed this up by adding cool filtered water or even a few ice cubes.

This step is important: never put boiling water into your enema bag and never use unfiltered tap water. Use your common sense and your bum will thank you for it!

Step 2: Set Up Your Space

Head to your bathroom and set up near the toilet. Lay down a towel or blanket on the floor (and a pillow if you want to get cosy, which we fully encourage). Hang your Happy Bum Bag on the hook provided, or place your kit on a secure surface above where you'll be lying. If you're new, keep the bag lower rather than higher - a lower position means a slower, gentler flow, which is much more manageable for your first time.

Step 3: Fill the Bag

Once your coffee has cooled to body temperature (always test it on your wrist first), pour it into your enema bag and make sure the clamp is firmly closed before you do so. Nobody wants a coffee spill on the bathroom floor.

Step 4: Get Comfortable and Insert the Tip

Apply a generous amount of coconut oil or natural lubricant to the silicone tip. Lie down on your side or on your back with your knees slightly bent. Gently insert the nozzle and then release the clamp to allow the coffee to flow in slowly. Breathe through it, relax your belly, and let it happen. The tip is soft silicone and very small — ladies, it's truly comparable to inserting a tampon. The process is not painful at all.

Step 5: Hold and Release

Once the bag is empty, remove the tip (or leave it in if you're more comfortable that way). Now comes the part that takes a little practice: try to hold the enema for 12–15 minutes. Don't stress if you can't on your first go — it genuinely takes a bit of time and consistency to build up to that. Even holding it for 5 minutes is still doing good things for your body. When you're ready, make your way to the toilet and release. The relief you feel after is very much the moment everyone talks about!

Step 6: Clean Your Kit

Rinse your Happy Bum Bag thoroughly with warm water, then sanitise it with Happy Bum Clean, hang it up to air dry, and store it away until next time. Keeping your kit clean is important, so don't skip this part.

Your Most Asked Questions, Answered

Should I do a water enema first?

Yes, we actually think this is a great idea — especially if you're brand new to all of this. A water enema is like a trial run. It gives you the chance to get familiar with inserting the tip, managing the flow, and holding the solution, all without the added layer of doing it with coffee for the first time. As a bonus, the warmth of the water helps relax the muscles in the intestines and makes it easier to clear the lower colon, which means when you follow up with your coffee enema, you'll be able to hold it more easily and get better results. Two birds, one bum.

Does it hurt?

No! Coffee enemas are not painful. The silicone tip is soft, small, and very easy to insert. Your tummy might gurgle a little, which is totally normal, but the process itself is genuinely comfortable. The relief you feel on the toilet afterwards more than makes up for any mild grumbling from your gut.

How often should I do an enema?

This is one of the most common questions we get, and the honest answer is: it depends on you and your body. Enemas are a very individual practice. Some people do them daily, some weekly, and some just whenever they feel like their body needs a reset. All of these are valid.

If you're dealing with chronic constipation, doing an enema daily can be a really helpful tool while you work on addressing the root cause. If you're doing a general cleanse or just starting out, 1–2 times per week is a great place to begin. And if you're ready to go all in on a liver detox, we have a 21 Day Enema Challenge to guide you through a transformative detox experience. Think of it like taking your colon to the gym- consistency is what gets results!

Can I do a coffee enema if I'm sensitive to caffeine?

Absolutely, yes. This surprises a lot of people, but the caffeine in a coffee enema works very differently to drinking coffee. When absorbed rectally, the caffeine bypasses the digestive system and goes straight to the liver via the portal vein, which means you don't get the same jittery, anxious feeling you might get from your morning cup. That said, if you are very sensitive, we'd recommend starting with a smaller amount of coffee and working your way up. It's also worth trying your first session in the morning rather than the evening, just to see how your body responds.

If you'd prefer to avoid caffeine entirely, our Happy Liver Tea is a beautiful organic herbal blend that can be used as an enema (or sipped as a tea!). It's naturally caffeine-free and formulated to support liver health and detoxification. The Happy Liver Bundle pairs it with a full enema kit if you want everything in one. We have several herbal blends that don't contain caffeine so you can try them all.

What's the best time of day to do a coffee enema?

The beauty of doing enemas at home is total flexibility. You can do them whenever suits your schedule and lifestyle. Some people love a morning enema to set themselves up for the day with energy and clarity. Others prefer the evening as a way to unwind and reset. We suggest trying a few different times to figure out what feels best for you. The most important thing is that you give yourself enough time to relax — rushing through it is not the vibe.

Do I need to take anything after my coffee enema?

Yes, aftercare is important and we talk about it a lot over on our Enema After Care guide. The short answer? Replenish, replenish, replenish. If you want the simplest possible way to cover all your bases, our Aftercare Bundle has everything you need in one go. But here's the breakdown:

Rehydrate naturally. After an enema your body has released a lot of fluid and with it some key minerals, so getting them back in quickly matters. Our new Happy Hydrate is a pure coconut water powder — light, natural, and packed with the electrolytes your body actually recognises. Just mix it with water for an easy, delicious way to rehydrate post-detox without anything artificial. Your gut will love it.

Replenish your good bacteria. Coffee enemas remove the bad stuff, but some of the good bacteria goes along for the ride too, so it's important to put it back. Gut Food is our 3-in-1 probiotic, plant protein, and wholefood powder that makes replenishing your microbiome genuinely enjoyable. It tastes like a strawberry milkshake, contains 2 billion CFU of probiotics per serve, and gives your gut the nourishment it needs to bounce back and thrive. Just blend it with your favourite milk and you're done.

Stay hydrated and eat well. Keep sipping water throughout the day and aim for clean, easy-to-digest foods after your session. Your gut has done a big job — give it some love in return.
