The Toxic Truth about Traditional Toilet Paper

The Toxic Truth about Traditional Toilet Paper

Aug 29, 2023Kyah Seary

Are you quickly grabbing the first Toilet Paper rolls you see on the shelves at Woolworths? Do you ever turn around the packaging and read what is actually in your Toilet Paper?

It's not the first thing you normally think to do with a product you are just going to flush down the toilet, but the truth is that any product containing toxic chemicals should not come into contact with your skin, especially genitalia.

The first thing most people do in a day is use the toilet. This is a fact of life. If your bathroom is stocked with the fluffiest, whitest Toilet Paper in the grocery store; you are unknowingly applying Chlorine Bleach and Formaldehyde onto your sensitive skin, which makes its way into your Blood Stream before you are even consciously awake and starting your day. Here is some research that we just can't un-see!

  • Paper industries use chlorine and chlorine dioxide to bleach it. This process creates cancer-causing chemicals such as dioxins and furans, which are in the air and pretty much everywhere else.
  • Low levels of exposure have been linked to many health problems such as cancer, hormone imbalances (dioxin is a hormone disruptor), immune system impairments, reduced fertility and birth defects.
  • Dioxins cannot be excreted by our bodies, so they just accumulate over time creating a very dangerous situation

Happy Bum Co. Eco Toilet Paper is made from 100% bamboo and has none of the above nasty elements. The paper is whitened by using a water based bleach. There are no fertilisers used in the manufacturing creating the most natural and sustainable tissue on the market. Happy Bum TP is FSC certificated, CE certificated and every raw material we use are based on environmental protection. They are plastic-free Tree Free paper products, the ink for printing is Soybean ink. All packages use 100% recycled paper. We make every effort to offer our Happy Bum Co. family fine quality products which are new, soft, comfortable, pure, and environmentally-friendly. When it comes to your families health its time to get out with the old and in with the new.

FAQ TIME! (Sustainability edition):

What makes Bamboo a better resource than trees?

One of the major reasons bamboo is more sustainable than wood pulp is that it grows much, much faster (in three to five years compared to 10 to 40 years for trees). As a result, it can be harvested much more frequently, which means our bamboo TP requires almost 90% less land per finished sheet to produce!

Where is the Bamboo Grown? Isn't local more sustainable?

The bamboo used in Happy Bum TP comes from the Sichuan region of China. Local farmers grow it on the borders of their family properties to supplement their income. The whole process is very localised! Each village has its own bamboo co-op, and after the crops have been harvested, they get chipped and sent to local pulp factories (aka our suppliers).

Isn't Bamboo food for Panda Bears?

The most common species of Bamboo the Giant Panda eats is Fargesia spathacea Franch. Pandas do eat other bamboo species, but not Neosinocalamus affinis, which is where our bamboo tissue comes from! No Pandas are going without food here!

That is all from us Happy Bum's!
