What's The Difference Between A Colonic and an Enema?

Whether you’re going for a colonic or doing an enema, you’re going to feel a million times better, and both are fantastic when it comes to gut health. But what’s the difference between a colonic and an enema? And what’s the difference between a coffee enema and a water one? Most importantly, which one is right for you?

What is a colonic?

A colonic, also known as colon hydrotherapy or colon irrigation, is a procedure that aims to cleanse the colon by flushing it with a larger amount of water.

During a closed system colonic, a trained therapist inserts a tube into the rectum through which warm water is infused into the colon. The water flows in and out continuously, helping to flush out waste material and toxins from the colon.

A colonic is done in-house with a colon hydrotherapist. Upon arrival, your therapist will explain the colonic process, discuss your goals, and review your diet and lifestyle. The entire process takes around 45 minutes.

Benefits of a colonic:

A colonic helps relieve constipation, gas, and bloating while improving digestion, metabolism, and nutrient absorption. It detoxifies the liver and blood, reduces toxicity, and lowers the risk of colon cancer. By eliminating parasites and bad bacteria, it strengthens immunity, enhances skin clarity, and rehydrates the body. Additionally, it boosts energy, mental clarity, and emotional well-being, leaving you feeling refreshed and revitalised.

A colonic will also clear more of your colon.

What is an enema?

An enema is done at home, in your own time. There are two types of enemas you can do, a water enema, or a coffee enema.

A water enema offers a safe and effective solution for immediate constipation relief. This simple ancient procedure can be done at home and involves introducing warm water into the colon through the rectum using an enema kit, helping to stimulate bowel movements and alleviate constipation.

Warm water enemas work by softening the stool and expanding the colon, which stimulates peristalsis - the natural contractions of the intestinal muscles. This process encourages the bowel to move and expel waste more easily. The warmth of the water also helps relax the muscles in the intestines, making it easier to pass stool.

With a water enema, you simply take in the water, and release right away, which makes it super convenient to fit into your lifestyle.

A coffee enema provides you with instant constipation relief, along with a range of other benefits. Coffee enemas stimulate phase one and phase two liver detoxification. When absorbed rectally, the caffeine in the enema coffee is transported directly to the liver via the portal vein, stimulating the following:

  • Increased bile flow in the liver and gallbladder

  • Dilation of the bile ducts

  • Glutathione production increased

  • Activation of the parasympathetic nervous system

  • Elimination of toxins and other impurities

  • Stimulated peristalsis

Coffee enemas may help physically remove intestinal parasites, candida yeast overgrowth, compacted stool and gas, mold and gut inflammation, bad bacteria, and used hormones.

With a coffee enema, you hold the liquid in for 12 – 15 minutes for maximum benefits before releasing. Think of them as a little bit of ‘me time’ away from the world.

So, what’s better for you? A colonic, a water enema, or a coffee enema?

They’re all great! What you choose largely depends on your situation. If there’s a colonic clinic not too far from you, we highly recommend a visit, especially as you’ll get the opportunity to speak one-on-one with a trained therapist. Coffee and water enemas are both great for in-home use, and they mean never having to worry about constipation again. And with a coffee enema, you’re not just cleaning out your colon, but you’re also removing toxins and chemicals from the blood.

“All Disease Begins in the Gut,” said Hippocrates. So, no matter what you decide is right for you, you’re on the right path to health.

Happy detoxing.
