By Kyah Seary, Founder of Happy Bum Co
Every product we've ever made at Happy Bum Co started with a gut feeling. And if you've ever stood in the supplement aisle completely overwhelmed, tried product after product and still felt like something was missing... you'll understand exactly why Happy Bum Gut Food exists.
Gut Food was born from me. From my own body, my own history, my own years of struggling and searching and slowly piecing back together a gut that had been a total wreck since childhood. It came from the little girl who grew up on antibiotics, from the teenager who couldn't go to the bathroom from the young woman who spent years trying to figure out what the hell was wrong with her, and from the mother who suddenly needed something simple, something complete, something she could trust, every single day, without fail.
I created Gut Food because I needed it. My kids needed it. And if I'm honest, I needed it long before I had the knowledge or the platform to make it exist.
This is the real story behind it.
Growing Up With a Gut That Never Really Worked
My gut issues didn't start in adulthood. They started in in my early adolescence.
I grew up in a medical household. Both of my parents were doctors, doing their absolute best with the knowledge they had at the time. But the approach back then was very pharmaceutical. Every sniffle, every rash, every allergy flare meant antibiotics. Steroids, antihistamines, anti-allergy medications. If there was a prescription for it, I probably took it.
And here's what nobody knew back then, and what we now understand to be one of the most important discoveries in modern health science: antibiotics don't just kill the bad bacteria. They kill everything. The good bacteria too. The ones responsible for your digestion, your immunity, your mood, your skin, your hormones, your energy, your ability to absorb nutrients and detoxify. They wipe the whole slate clean.
And when that happens over and over again throughout childhood? Your microbiome never gets the chance to build...to thrive and become as robust as it's supposed to be.
By the time I hit my teenage years, my bowel had essentially stopped moving. I was constipated, bloated, exhausted, inflamed, and completely disconnected from how my body was supposed to feel. I didn't have the words for it then. I didn't know what a microbiome was. I just knew that I felt terrible most of the time, I looked 9 months pregnant, it was embarrassing and nobody could really explain why.
Looking back, it makes complete sense. My gut bacteria were depleted, imbalanced, and struggling to survive after the tons of atomic antibiotic bombs I had dropped on it. My gut had been impacted at such a young age and what most people don't tell you is that it may never come back to what it was...and certainly not on it's own. Most people in this era didnt give a second thought to the gut, but without a thriving microbiome, everything else suffers too. I was just going to find out the hard way.

What Your Gut Bacteria Are Actually Doing For You
When I began my healing journey and started going deep on the science, I was genuinely blown away by how much our gut bacteria influence. Not just digestion... Everything.
Your microbiome plays a direct role in:
Digestion and motility: keeping things moving and breaking down food properly so you can actually absorb what you're eating.
Immune function: roughly 70-80% of your immune system lives in your gut. When your microbiome is compromised, your immune response follows.
Inflammation: a depleted or imbalanced gut is a chronically inflamed gut, and chronic inflammation is the root of almost every modern disease we know of.
Hormone balance: your gut bacteria help metabolise and regulate oestrogen, cortisol, and thyroid hormones. When the gut is off, hormones follow.
Mental health and serotonin production: around 90% of your body's serotonin is produced in the gut. If you've ever felt anxious, low, or foggy and couldn't explain it, your gut bacteria are worth investigating.
Detoxification: your gut bacteria help process and eliminate toxins. A sluggish, depleted microbiome means toxins recirculate instead of being cleared.
Skin health: the gut-skin axis is real. Acne, eczema, rosacea, and dull skin are frequently traced back to gut imbalance.
Energy and metabolism: your gut bacteria influence how efficiently you convert food to energy and how well your metabolism functions.
And just as powerfully as they support us, they are destroyed by: antibiotics, processed foods, refined sugar, alcohol, chronic stress, pesticides, artificial sweeteners, poor sleep, and chronic constipation (because when waste sits too long, toxins recirculate and the gut environment becomes hostile to good bacteria).
When you grow up on antibiotics and a less-than-ideal diet, like I did, your gut never gets the foundation it needs. And rebuilding that foundation became one of the most important parts of my healing journey. Probiotics stopped being a "wellness trend" for me. They became a huge asset and a non-negotiable.
(If you're curious about how deeply your gut affects your hormones, check out our article on hormonal imbalance and gut health.)
Then I Became a Mum. And Everything Changed Again.
Before kids, I had a beautiful supplement routine. I had time. I had energy. I could take ten different powders and capsules and tinctures if I wanted to. Heck, I made all my own food from scratch. I was intentional, consistent, and totally on top of it.
Then I had three children.
And the routine I had so carefully built became completely impossible. I was tired in a way I didn't know was possible. I was juggling a business, a household, and three small humans who needed me for everything, all the time. I barely had time to drink water, let alone take a dozen different supplements.
But I still needed support, probably more than ever. My gut needed nourishment, my hormones needed balancing (especially postpartum x three!). My energy needed help. My digestion needed consistency, I was finding I was getting more bloated. And I wanted something I could give my kids too. Something that would protect their microbiomes from the very beginning, that would help them build the strong gut foundation I never had.
I didn't want them to grow up the way I did. Inflamed, constipated, disconnected from their bodies, not understanding why they felt off. I wanted better for them.
And that's when Gut Food was born.
"Gut Food is the product I wish existed when I was younger. It's what I needed as a new mum, and it's what I now take every single morning with complete confidence. One scoop. That's it. Everything my gut needs, everything my family needs. Done." — Kyah Seary, Founder, Happy Bum Co
The Star of the Show: Bacillus Coagulans Unique IS2™
When I started formulating Gut Food, I knew exactly what I was looking for in a probiotic strain. It had to tick every single box, because anything less wasn't good enough for my family, and it certainly wasn't good enough for yours.
I needed something that was:
- Clinically studied with real, published research behind it
- Shelf-stable (no refrigeration required)
- Heat-stable (survives being mixed into a warm drink)
- Able to survive stomach acid and actually reach the gut alive
- Able to genuinely colonise the intestine and get to work
- Effective for constipation and bloating
- Supportive for IBS
- Beneficial for immunity
- Safe for children and adults alike
Bacillus Coagulans Unique IS2™ ticked every single box.
And here's why this strain is genuinely special.
What Makes Bacillus Coagulans IS2 Different From Every Other Probiotic
Most probiotics are fragile. The standard Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains you'll find in the average probiotic supplement are sensitive to heat, stomach acid, moisture, and time on a shelf. Many of them arrive in your gut already dead, having been destroyed before they even got there. Which is why so many people take probiotics and feel... nothing.
Bacillus Coagulans IS2 is built differently.
It's a spore-forming bacteria, which means it has a tough, protective outer shell (called an endospore) that acts like a suit of armour. This shell allows it to survive the harsh, acidic environment of the stomach that destroys most other probiotic strains. Once it passes through and reaches the small intestine, the endospore "wakes up," germinates, and begins actively colonising the gut.
This is not a probiotic that simply passes through and waves. This one stays. It gets to work. And the research backs that up.
What the Research Shows
Bacillus Coagulans IS2 has been studied across multiple clinical trials and has shown impressive results across a wide range of gut and immune outcomes:
Digestive health and motility: Studies have found that Bacillus Coagulans IS2 significantly improves bowel regularity, reduces straining, and supports healthy, comfortable digestion. For anyone who has dealt with constipation, this one matters enormously.
IBS symptom relief: Multiple studies have shown meaningful reductions in bloating, abdominal discomfort, and irregular bowel habits in people with IBS using this specific strain.
Immune support: Bacillus Coagulans IS2 has been shown to enhance the activity of natural killer cells and support a more robust immune response. Given that 70–80% of immune function originates in the gut, having a thriving microbial community is one of the most powerful things you can do for your immunity.
Reduction of inflammation: By supporting microbiome diversity and gut lining integrity, this strain helps reduce the chronic low-grade inflammation that underlies so many modern health complaints.
Mental wellbeing: Emerging research on the gut-brain axis continues to show that a healthier, more diverse microbiome is directly linked to improved mood, reduced anxiety, and better cognitive function. Bacillus Coagulans IS2 is showing up in this research too.
Nutrient absorption: When your gut bacteria are balanced and thriving, your ability to absorb vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients from food dramatically improves. This strain supports the gut environment that allows this to happen.
Each serve of Gut Food delivers 2 billion CFU of Bacillus Coagulans Unique IS2™, a clinically meaningful dose that actually reaches your gut alive and gets to work.
For people like me — and like so many of our Happy Bum Co community — who grew up on antibiotics, who have dealt with chronic constipation, IBS, or depleted microbiomes, this strain is genuinely the one. It's resilient enough to survive the journey and effective enough to make a real difference.

Everything Else Inside the Scoop
Bacillus Coagulans IS2 is the heart of Gut Food, but it's surrounded by an entire ecosystem of ingredients that I chose with the same level of intentionality.
Organic Acacia Fibre: The Prebiotic Foundation (11%)
You can have the best probiotic in the world, but without prebiotic fibre to feed it, your good bacteria don't have what they need to thrive. Prebiotics are the food that fuels beneficial gut bacteria and allows them to grow, multiply, and colonise.
Organic Acacia Fibre is one of the gentlest, most effective prebiotic fibres available. It's well-tolerated even by people with sensitive guts (unlike some other prebiotic sources that can cause gas or discomfort), and it feeds a wide range of beneficial bacterial species, supporting microbiome diversity rather than just one or two strains.
Each serve of Gut Food delivers 2g of prebiotic fibre — working hand in hand with the Bacillus Coagulans IS2 to create an environment where good bacteria can genuinely take hold and thrive.
Organic Sprouted and Fermented Pea Protein: Plant Protein That Actually Works (74%)
This is the one that surprises people the most. Yes, Gut Food has 10g of high-quality organic plant protein per serve and no, it doesn't taste like chalk or leave you bloated.
Here's why I added protein, and why it matters so much, especially for women:
Protein is foundational. It supports muscle repair and tissue building, hormone production (your hormones are literally made from amino acids), blood sugar stability (which means steadier energy and fewer cravings), metabolism, satiety, and gut healing. Most women, especially busy mums, are not getting enough protein, and it shows up as fatigue, cravings, hormonal imbalance, and poor recovery.
But most protein powders cause bloating. They're heavy, hard to digest, and they often contain fillers, artificial sweeteners, or whey that irritates the gut.
This pea protein is sprouted and fermented, which makes it significantly more digestible and bioavailable than standard pea protein. The sprouting process breaks down anti-nutrients, and the fermentation process pre-digests the protein so your gut can absorb it easily, without the gas or heaviness that derails most protein powders.
It's clean, gentle, and genuinely nourishing. Exactly what I wanted.
Papaya Powder: The Digestive Enzyme Hero
Papaya contains papain, a natural digestive enzyme that helps break down proteins and supports the entire digestive process. It has a long history of traditional use for easing digestion, reducing bloating, and soothing the gut lining.
For anyone dealing with sluggish digestion or discomfort after eating, papaya is a gentle, natural ally.
Organic Acai Berry: Antioxidants and Anti-Inflammatory Support
Acai is one of the most antioxidant-rich foods on the planet. Rich in polyphenols, it helps combat oxidative stress and inflammation, both of which are elevated in a compromised gut environment. It also supports skin health, which is directly connected to gut health through the gut-skin axis.
Acai also contributes to microbiome diversity by feeding a broad range of beneficial bacteria species, adding another layer of prebiotic-like support.
Organic Chia Seed Powder: Fibre, Omega-3s, and Gut Love
Chia seeds are a powerhouse for gut health. They provide additional soluble fibre that supports bowel regularity, feeds beneficial bacteria, and creates a gentle bulking effect that helps keep things moving comfortably.
They're also a rich plant-based source of omega-3 fatty acids, which reduce inflammation in the gut lining and support overall gut integrity. For anyone dealing with constipation, chia is a quiet but powerful support.
(I have always loved chia seeds and even add Gut Food to them when I made a Chia Pudding for the extra nutrients!)
Organic Vegetable Powders: Wholefood Nourishment From the Inside Out
Gut Food contains a blend of organic vegetable powders — beetroot juice, carrot juice, kale leaf, spinach leaf, and broccoli sprout, chosen specifically for their contribution to gut health, microbiome diversity, and overall nourishment.
Broccoli sprout, in particular, is worth calling out. It's one of the richest sources of sulforaphane, a compound that supports liver detoxification, reduces inflammation, and promotes a healthy gut lining. Spinach and kale provide chlorophyll, folate, and magnesium (essential for bowel motility). Beetroot supports liver function and blood flow. Carrot provides beta-carotene and antioxidants.
Together, these vegetable powders mean that your one morning scoop is delivering meaningful, real-food nourishment. Not just a probiotic capsule in disguise.
Organic Apple and Grape Juice Powder + Natural Flavour + Organic Steviol Glycosides
No refined sugar. No artificial sweeteners. No fillers. Just real, clean, natural sweetness from organic fruit concentrates and stevia, keeping Gut Food delicious without compromising on the values I've built this entire brand around.
Why Taste Was Non-Negotiable
In our household, we don't do refined sugar or chemical additives. Everything is as organic and natural as possible — not because it's trendy, but because it's how we live and what I genuinely believe in and I refuse to budge on that.
But Gut Food also had to taste delicious. Because if something doesn't taste good, nobody takes it consistently. And consistency is everything when it comes to gut health.
Gut Food has a wildberry smoothie flavour that is genuinely, honestly delicious. Creamy, smooth, subtly sweet. My kids ask for it. My husband takes it without being reminded. It blends beautifully into coconut water, your milk of choice, or a morning smoothie, or just into water if you're in a rush.
It's the one thing my whole family takes every single day without complaint. And that alone tells you everything you need to know.
How Gut Food Fits Into My Daily Routine
Over the years I've learned that the habits we actually stick to are the simple ones. I don't believe in overwhelming routines or endless supplement lists. I believe in a few non-negotiable daily habits that create a strong foundation, and everything else sits on top.
For me, that baseline looks like:
- My morning coffee enema (a game changer for liver health, detoxification, and energy. Read more about coffee enemas here)
- One scoop of Gut Food in coconut water or my favourite milk
- 3 litres of water or coconut water with Happy Hydrate electrolytes
- Some form of movement
Everything else — our Daily Fibre, ConstaClear, saunas, yoga, wholefoods — is layered on top. But my baseline is simple, sustainable, and deeply supportive.
Gut Food became part of that baseline because it makes nourishing my gut effortless. One scoop, one moment, one small act of daily care that compounds over time into something really powerful.
(Dealing with chronic constipation alongside gut rebuilding? Our ConstaClear works beautifully alongside Gut Food.)
Quality That Doesn't Cost the Earth
One thing that has always been non-negotiable for me is quality. I am incredibly particular about what goes into my body and my children's bodies, and that philosophy is woven into every single Happy Bum Co product. Gut Food had to meet my own personal standards: organic where possible, free from refined sugar, free from fillers, free from chemical additives, and made with ingredients that actually do something meaningful.
I didn't want a pretty label on a mediocre product. I wanted something that genuinely works. Something that nourishes the gut on every level.
And I wanted it to be genuinely accessible.
We live in a world where a morning café coffee costs $6–$10 and nobody thinks twice. For less than that per serve, Gut Food gives your body organic plant protein, 2 billion CFU of clinically studied probiotics, prebiotic fibre, digestive enzymes, antioxidants, and organic wholefoods. It is one of the most affordable, high-quality, all-in-one gut health products on the market, because I wanted it to be something people could actually stick with. Something that feels like a daily ritual, not a luxury.
When you think about the real cost of poor gut health, the bloating, the fatigue, the brain fog, the inflammation, the appointments, the years of trial and error, investing in your gut every morning is one of the most cost-effective things you can do for your overall wellbeing.
"I wanted Gut Food to be something that truly does it all: digestion, microbiome support, protein, nourishment, energy, all in one scoop. Because that's what I needed as a mum, and I know it's what so many people in our community need too." — Kyah Seary, Founder, Happy Bum Co
