Benefits of Glutathione - Our Super Antioxidant

Aug 18, 2024Kyah Seary

Glutathione is produced by the liver and acts as an antioxidant to strengthen the immune system. But what exactly is glutathione and what are the benefits?

What is glutathione?

Glutathione is composed of three non-essential amino acids: cysteine, glycine, and glutamic acid, which serve as fundamental building blocks for proteins.

It is produced in almost every cell of your body and can be found in reduced or oxidised form.

Adequate levels of glutathione are crucial for maintaining cellular health and function. Conversely, low glutathione levels have been linked to an increased risk of several serious health conditions, including cancer, Type 2 diabetes, hepatitis, and Parkinson’s disease.

Ensuring sufficient glutathione levels is essential for supporting overall health and mitigating the risk of these diseases.

What are the benefits of glutathione?

There are a lot of benefits of glutathione, some of which include:

  • A reduction of cell damage – Glutathione helps protect cells from damage caused by harmful molecules called free radicals. This antioxidant action supports a healthy liver, which helps in detoxifying the body and aiding in metabolism. By keeping the liver in good shape, glutathione helps the body filter out toxins, process nutrients, and maintain overall health.
  • An improvement of insulin sensitivity – Diabetes is a common condition where the body doesn’t produce enough insulin or becomes resistant to it. Low levels of glutathione can increase oxidative stress and contribute to insulin resistance. By boosting glutathione production, insulin sensitivity can be improved, helping the body manage blood sugar levels more effectively and function as it should.
  • Reducing the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease – Parkinson’s disease is a neurodegenerative disorder that leads to motor function loss and cognitive decline. During the progression of the disease, the brain produces lower levels of glutathione. Incorporating glutathione into treatment can help improve some motor functions in patients, providing a valuable addition to managing the disease's symptoms.
  • An improvement in psoriasis – Psoriasis is a skin disease that causes a rash with itchy, scaly patches, most commonly on the knees, elbows, trunk and scalp. Research has shown that patients who were given a supplement to increase their glutathione levels noticed an improvement in their skin.
  • Help with anti-aging – Ageing is inevitable, but how we age is something we can influence. As we grow older, our cells produce less glutathione, slowing down the body's antioxidant defences. Increasing glutathione in the body can help counteract this decline, reducing wrinkles and improving skin elasticity, thus contributing to a more youthful appearance.

Did you know coffee enemas help increase glutathione?

Yes, coffee enemas have been found to boost glutathione production in your body!

The caffeine in the enema coffee gets absorbed into the blood via the rectal veins and goes straight to the liver via the portal vein.

This stimulates the production and flow of bile, by dilating the bile ducts, and increases the production of glutathione in the liver by up 600 - 700%.

Glutathione is the liver’s master antioxidant, crucial for detoxification. The liver uses glutathione to bind free radicals, which can then leave the body. Coffee enemas may also boost energy levels, immune function, and mental clarity and calm the body by switching it out of fight or flight mode and into the parasympathetic nervous state.
